Study on unintentional release of microplastics

Introduction

This website was developed for disseminating information and stakeholder engagement in the context of a study to support the European Commission's work on possible action to reduce the presence in the environment of microplastics unintentionally released.

The study focused on six sources, viz. tyre abrasion, pre-production plastic pellets, synthetic textiles, paints, laundry and dishwasher capsules and geotextiles.

newIn October 2023, European Commission has proposed several measures to reduce microplastic release in the environment.

  • EU actions against microplastics (Brochure)
  • Proposal for a Regulation on preventing pellet losses to reduce microplastic pollution
  • Proposal for a Restriction on intentionally added microplastics
  • Proposal for a Regulation on EURO 7 related to release of microplastics from tyres
